Smart DIYs is a Japanese product design company that develops low-cost open-source laser cutters and engravers. Smart DIYs founder, Yoshiya Arii, explained that in the era of mass production, people relied on factories and production lines to manufacture their products. However, today low-cost digital manufacturing tools have made it possible for individuals to start businesses and express their creativity by producing their own products, thanks to the ‘democratizion’ of production.
They do this through the creation of their open source DIY tools, such as the “FABOOL Laser Mini”—an affordable, ready-to-assemble desktop laser cutter and engraver and the FABOOL Laser CO2, the largest ready-to-assemble CO2 laser cutter and engraver in the world. The FABOOL Laser CO2 uses high-power 40W CO2 laser tube, has the cutting area as big as 60cm×44cm, and costs less than $3,000.
Furthermore, all of Smart DIYs devices come with free software that enables users to create and share design files and production images with the rest of the community. Yoshiya plans to release a long-anticipated new Fabool software on Feb 15th, 2018.
The new software includes additional design, sharing, and fabrication options, and is easier to operate than the previous version. “We will continue this journey to make this world everybody can make their ideas realities,” Smart DIY says.
